A quick flicker isn't always a problem. Here's how to tell normal from "call an electrician." Updated July 2026.
Air conditioner compressors pull a large burst of current the instant they start — briefly more than they draw while running. That momentary surge can cause a slight, split-second dip in voltage elsewhere in the house, which shows up as a quick flicker or dim. In a lot of homes, especially with older wiring or a service that's at the edge of its capacity, a brief flicker every time the AC cycles on is common and not dangerous by itself.
Don't open the panel yourself to look for a loose connection — that's licensed-electrician work, live electrical panels are not a DIY project. The useful homeowner-level check is simply noticing the pattern: does it happen every single time, is it getting worse, and does it affect just the AC circuit or the whole house. That pattern is exactly what an electrician needs to hear to diagnose it quickly.
